NN: from a pin of a Beatle book...was really instantaneous....

jack :WELL BTM IS MORE THAN A BAND, IS SOMETHING THAT WE CARRY SINCE OUR CHILDHOOD, A CONCEPT THAT EVOLVED 8 YEARS AGO AND IS STILL ON THE RUN SO WE THINK THAT IT DOESNT MATTER IF WE DONT LIVE IN THE SAME CITY. THE CONCEPT CAN'T BE TEAR APART.

Jack:AND WE CHANGED IT TO BLACK BECAUSE ITS COOLER.

B: You started playing musical instruments and then evolved to a more electronic setting…

B: Tell us a little bit about your musical influences, when you started playing...

Jack: first musical INSTRUMENTS and THEN SOFTWARE AND SYNTHS.

NN: We started playing just for fun....the two of us...jamming in a room playing Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath.

Jack: WELL WE STARTED Listening A LOT OF PUNK MUSIC AT FIRST
AND HARDCORE STUFF LIKE EVERY KID OF OUR Generation.

NN: yeah, that’s right.

Jack:THOUGH, MY FIRST RECORD WAS MECHANICAL ANIMALS
IN CASSETE…

B:Great..

Jack: MY SISTER BOUGHT IT FOR ME WHEN I WAS 10.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE RECS EVER!
AND a Queen cassette, I'M NOT SURE…

B: So you experienced the transition from tape to digital..

Jack:
IN A WAY

And we use to play mechanical animals on the tape recorder.

NN: and we used to listen
some classic stuff.
I remember. It was direct influence from our parents.

B: I know from personal experience that NN has a unique collection on vinyl with rock n roll classics such as Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.

Jack:OH YEAH, A LOVELY ONE,VERY GROOVY RECORDS

B: A really vintage collection…

NN: we were interested in the psicodelic culture for a while…

B: Was that your moms.. NN?

NN: It was from my moms friend, a camba who used to smack himself listening the records...then he gave them to me..
Those records had their path…

NN: It was like
a real religious act..." here son, my precious vinyl collection...take care of it"....

Jack: I THINK THAT BASICALLY WE WENT FROM WHITE PEOPLE MUSIC TO BLACK PEOPLE MUSIC TO WHITE AGAIN TO GERMANY TRANSVESTID ELECTRO TO BLACK AGAIN SO THERES ALWAYS A BLACK DUDE, NOW there’s BARACK OBAMA...LIKE THE UNCLE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE…JAJA

NN: We started playing after Jack came back from U.S. …I got a bass and he bought his guitar so we said one day on web camera… let me see your Fender…
And we said...we should play some Beatles music.

Jack:IN those TIMES I Gained a LOT OF WEIGHT YOU KNOW I WENT INTO SOME KIND OF ELVIS MOOD… GOT FAT, growed THE SIDEBURNS, LOST THE DIGNITY …

NN: that was the early stage of BTM. jaja and I was a metal head.
I was listening a lot of Iron Maiden, nine inch nails and Megadeth.

B: Do you think Elvis was the real deal? Who’s your favourite artist from that generation?

Jack: I THINK THAT A MAN THAT CAN BE REALLY FAT AND STILL BE THE KING OF ROCK N ROLL MUST BE SOMETHING…

B: It’s been said that he was the first human to watch 3 TVs at the same time…

B: Why do you think this band is still is a strong influence?

NN:because is the darkest band of that time. They had aesthetics and a
concept thing in their own way…

B: Which year did you make the transition from real instruments to software?. Was it a natural progression or you just were fed up with your drum player?

NN: 2006

NN: I think now the producers are like treasure hunters...

B: Why is that?

NN: because they get more profit selling than producing.
like the new teenage bands....its all about the
money and the hype. When you listen to these records they seem like

B: What about movies or books?
a great producer is also a great story teller..

B: Tell us your insight on that matter.

Jack: WELL, IN ANCIENT TIMES THEY DIDNT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO, SO THEIR ENTERTAINMENT WAS READING BOOKS AND WRITING THEM
SO A LOT OF PEOPLE WROTE VERY DANGEOURS THINGS, AND PEOPLE BELIEVED THEM SO IF YOU READ A LOT OF BOOKS,ONE AFTER ANOTHER YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO PROCESS ALL THAT INFO AND YOUR BRAIN WILL BREAKOUT.

NN:
I think books are fun....just be careful because like all the information we reserve
it could be dangerous....and could be our saviour too.

Jack: SO GO TO YOUR LIBRARIES, KIDS.

B: Why do you think the Beatles went to India to meet with all this gurus.. Zeppelin members also were affiliated to occult masters such as Crowley. Are you looking for your own mystic experience?

NN: I don’t believe in mystic experiences....only in good drugs.

Jack: WELL I THINK THAT MYSTIC THINGS MUST EXIST BUT TO BE HONEST I NEVER HAD A REALLY STRONG Experience HAHAHA

B: We were discusing on how psicodelics affect the artist music…

Jack: well definitely they roll a part on our music.
They’re the Travolta to our Samuel L. Jackson,
The Chaney to our Bush.

That’s amazing nowadays I can no longer think when I do that kind of stuff
I just enter into the twilight zone
and I’m there watching everything melt.

I don’t know why lots of People Are Scared of this kind of stuff specially the ones that have never taken Them,Those are the ones that give you advice about things that they don’t even know.

from people doing music at your current locations?
what makes the difference on Your approach?

Jack:

I think
the majority of producers just make songs
and don’t have any direction of where they want to go

its different ways of work....both funny

They’re just happy with their chicks
if you take a look of any of the best electronic records of 2008 in any genre all of them have an artistic direction and a aesthetic to follow- it's not like they just got the software and started pressing buttons
NN:
i think is funniest when we can talk and play at the same time....when we play live sessions via internet is weirder
because I cant believe it is really

so. is pretty cool play and work on different ways under the same concept of sound

we think before doing

its funny when you do it without thinking
but that is a concept that we like to introduce in our live performances
but in the studio its another deal
cause a performance is a representation of live, when you don’t have the control 100%, the chance play a major part in our live work
im very influenced by john cage and his writings about chance and other related matters

NN:
Yes...we used to work on different ways, studio is always different because you have all the equipment ready to go
but i think it is great because u try new things.
JacK:
Yep new sounds, new life.

B:
certainly.. So when You work via internet You do follow some ...strucTUCTURE..
How you blend it all together?

NN: I think is kind of exit door of the life in the big cities

well mr.n is always in charge of the drum programming

so we decided to play via internet live sessions
Jack:
and I’m always in charge of the synths
NN:
we used to listen the same music
and we know each other
so...its not hard to blend our music
Jack:
we instantly recognize what the other is trying to do, so we adjust everything to reach that goal
and i think you saw
that in our private live session
the infamous BTM Saturday night session.

NN:
I really know what he is doing....so I simply follow the lead or he follows the tempo of the beat
...in studio we have more instruments and any
how the sound its better and we can play two or three different synths.

B: Yes i toOk notice that BOth BTM members when playing live sessions together have a special quemistry
NN:
and its the 4 years of practice

and 12 years or so of friendship

and all that under btm concept.....its all part of the cake
B: I see…
both of You guys travel on a regular basis.. How is BIG CITY LIFE affecting the way BTM in 2009?
NN: we saw that we can make it happen in other cities
JacK:
hahaha
big cities really take me by surprise
cause i love the movement and the speed of everything
but everyone is as lonely as they don’t want to be
and they hate the same things as everyone else
and they misbehave the same way
its not as hard as they make you believe
except for the $$$

NN:
i think big cities change your way of seeing, smelling, and listening… everything…u are like an ant in places like NYC or Mexico DF…
Jack:
the world is upside down nowadays, lonely people live in small towns, and the ones that don’t want to be lonely hate their big city, big cities are made specially for people who like being alone- there are too many things to do in the city
so you can not waste your time it in another person
NN:
yes, that´s true

B: Is love life affecting your music?

NN: Not at all.

B:do you have something to quote about that matter.

NN:We make music under our concept so ...jajaja, I don’t know how to say this...

I do have another project is an avant garde music project with some guys from the OEIN

but im studying design and I don’t have much extra time, design, my own music...i think i have no time for other project.

but that’s another thing so it doesn't bother BTM at all.

cause I do study music, so i must have other projects running all the time but if i would have been studying another thing I guess i would the same as mr NN.

because it is timeless, It has music in it so it doesn´t need the time to exist.

B:What do You feel about Bolivian scene?

NN:

RUPTURE EN LA GOTA DE AGUA

Dj Rupture is the pseudonym of Jace Clayton, the New York DJ and Producer that is playing this thursday 27th at Ojo de Agua. Dj Rupture was born in Boston and started spinning records at college radio during the late 1990´s. His standard setup involves three turnrables, on which he creates complicated mixes—such as one with acapella vocals, the second with breakbeats, and the third with ambient effects.

Dj Rupture's first big break came in 2001 with Gold Teeth Theif a mix which combines hip hop, ragga, breakcore, jungle, noise and music from around the globe. His second mixtape Minesweeper Suite was an even greater success, with the UK music magazine The Wire calling it one of the 10 best records of 2002. A year later, Rupture produced Special Gunpower his most critically acclaimed album to date. DJ Rupture is also part of the musical group Nettle and runs his own label, Soot Records. In 2008, he co-founded a new label with Matt Shadetek called Dutty Artz.

In addition to this superb artist the show for this 27th has a line-up that La Paz city will remember most definitely. Responsable for the Digital Cumbia sound, Sonido Martines is a prolific Argentinian Dj that has been mixing dubplates from different genres such as cumbia, vallenato, dub,latin & urban sounds. This gig is part of his international tour that will continue in Lima and will end december 31th at Festival Depayz arts in Paris, France.

The warmp-up for this event is in charge of Oi+Bass crew Djs QUIEN & A-JAX, two of the most talented breakbeat djs in our city.

A really wonderful venue to have Rupture playing along with Martines, A-JAX and QUIEN,whos influences go from latin rhytms to hardcore drum n bass, classic, jazzy sounds or even folklore and 8-bit.

True fans of the eclectic sounds should be thankful of this event to happend in a city that shows each-and-every day that the crave towards broken beats and underground sounds grows deeper in the individual.

Closing this month´s edition we have an interview to one of the finiest producers in the drum n bass genre in our city. We are talking about Kusillo, Paceño producer proud of his mestizo heritage and beatmaker with a high dossage of heavy bass lines and twisted drum rolls.

KUSILLO:

"I think we're experiencing a mistical ressurection with the music, recuperando our identity and we should be proud of the Drum n Bass pacenio y andino… fast patterns, Andean native instruments and heavy basslines that are now part of our life."

Bakuki: Tell me about first time you listened jungle breaks. first impressions...

Kusillo: I don’t exactly remember but I think it was near the year 2003 when I heard my first drum steps, I remember I was playing GTA3 when suddenly a dnb drumstep fucked up my brain forever.

B: So you got the first contact thru videogames?

Yeap, GTA3 he he

B: Remember the track?

K: It was a radio station.

B: Where were you living at that time?

La Paz. the year 2004... I met Starwind (Mike) he introduced me to new steps, shortly after that I had to travel to Chicago, to study, I met new junglists and I started to produce my first tracks.

B. What can you tell about jungle scene there?

K: I didn't met so many junglists. the few ones liked hip hop more than jungle. I know there´s a close relationship between the two genres, however; I was not into hiphop.

B: Was there a weekly drum n bass session were you were living?

K: I heard about some sessions, however 1 year i's not enough I was just getting into the scene.

B: Did you use to go out a lot or just produce at home?

K: Man I couldn’t drive that’s why I couldn’t go out very often, I just started producing the tracks at home listening to the music my friends brought to my home. During that time I was producing psytrance they introduced me to jungle steps deeply.

B: So you came a little early back home..

K: Yeah, I couldn’t finish my career (Computer Science), now I’m studing music.

B: Do you have any regrets?

K: No regrets, I enjoy living in La Paz, me siento mas libre aqui, de hecho hay más libertades en este país, that's the way I feel about living in here, anyway, living in La Paz gave me the inspiration for creating those fusion tracks.

B: I feel that coming back home gave you a new perspective on jungle breaks...

K: Exactly, the idea of the fusion, Psicodelia Aymara, Awayo & reflejos de un pueblo enfermo, you know if you go to a "party" en el altiplano, they get into a trance with alcohol, ravers do the same with other music and other drugs. But at the end "it's the same kind of trance that people enjoy"

B: Kusillo was producing other kind of tracks on diferent genres, what happend in the way... Why you chose to draw faster patterns to a sincope step?

K: Well, I started producing psytrance as “Elektrogen”, I still like that genre but not for me to produce it. It was not what I was looking for… I like faster steps variations in the drum patterns and heavy basslines.

B: Why is drum n bass so apealling to you? What do you see in DNB that you can´t get in psytrance?

K: Besides the rythm you know it’s more jazzy, it has a lot possibilities when you produce it, also I like to hear a heavy bassline, you know like having a bass talking to you...On top of that you can also use psytrance effects "encima" de los drum steps. I think I’m making a fusion with the two genres, you know it’s my influence, I think some people call it “neurofunk”. Also it's more urban... you know... as starwind said..." living in this concrete jungle"…

B: Kusillo has almost finished his first Lp, how many tracks are there in this project?

K: I think I got like 16 tracks, but the LP will have only 13, just a drum n bass/jungle LP, my down-tempo/ambient tracks will be released with Neurotrance Records.

B: Tell us a little bit about the production of this tracks. Where exactly in La Paz you produced them, and what equipment you used to produce these tracks. (sofware/hardware)

K: These tracks where produced at home (Miraflores), using VSTs en su totalidad.My equipment is just a notebook, also I got 2 MIDI controllers that I never use, I forgot about my piano keyboard, I rather use the piano roll and fill the patterns, you know like writing a music score, the other controller (UC-33) just got knobs and faders that I use to play my music live. About the software I started to use Renoise 1.9.0 like 3 months ago to produce just the drums, once I got the drums I use Ableton Live and the VSTs to produce the synths. Finally, Adobe Audition, to fix some things related to the wave files.

B: You have an upcoming show, where you will use one of this gadgets, tell us about it... When and were can we check out Kusillo´s Live Act?

I'll be estrenado my live act at 2 gigs, Samahain and Urbandance in November, you'll be listening to new tracks, 4 or 5 including a remix of Mago’s Black Magick and new styles of fusion between andean music & jungle steps.

B: So we´ll listen to a entire set of your tunes.. this must be one of the first La Paz jungle cats to do so...

K: Yeah

B: Why do you think other La Paz drum n bass djs don´t produce their own tracks?

B: I really don’t know, but I hope we’ll be hearing new producers and new ideas the following years. This is just the beginning.

B: Maybe La Paz scene is a little commercial so djs prefer to play other people´s tunes instead of their own...

K: That could be a reason, anyway I don’t care I’ll keep producing my own tracks…

B: Im a big fan of your work man... What would you say to young producers that want to start producing tracks in La Paz?

K: Just follow your dreams, hardwork and patience is the clue to success, so keep producing your music no matter what, y sobre todo keep it real. that's what I would say to any kind of artist, not only producers. And when I say keep it real it’s coz I’m a mestizo. I would say a proud mestizo , and my music is the result of who am I, no me hago al loco, I know myself, my roots so I know where I come from and as I said before I’m proud of that.

B: The live set you are presenting haz a remix from another jungle producer from La Paz...

K: Yep, Mago's Black Magick, I made that remix coz I like the drums in that song, it was a kind of inspiration too, for the last tracks I’ve uploaded to my website.

B: What´s the conexion betwen OI+BASS djs and you?

B: Well, I had an invitation from DJ QUIEN to join oi+bass crew, I started to hang out with some frinds at orange club, and those were the first times I heard dnb in La Paz, I didn’t know that I could find real junglists in town, this experience was the other part of my inspiration.

B: Will we ever see Kusillo playing other people´s tunes as a regular dj?

B: I think you'll only see me performing my live act. I like to "sacar todo lo que hay in my head" y ponerlo en mis canciones, maybe in the future I'll become a regular dj, it depends.. I don’t know what to expect form the future, esa situacion se puede dar como tambien no. But you know as Im producing my own tracks, el material se acaba, so you'll have to wait for the next presentation maybe next year, I'll be producing more tracks for then.

B: Awesome. Last thoughts. Why do you think broken beats will seduce the ears of young people in La Paz? What´s so different in our scene that other scenes don´t have..

K: Well, I think each scene got it’s thing , however sometimes people gets bored of the same old thing, and they look for new things, as I do for new sounds, so expect an evolution in Kusillo´s sound. Broken beat madness returns to Orange club with a special guest from Santa Cruz .

OI+BASS cru is celebrating their 3th date playing jungle/drum n bass as the main theme for the venue. DJs Ajax and Quien have been playing up tempo beats since the early years of electronic scene in La Paz, this kind of background makes the event a must-go for the breakbeat lover. Joining the team Magician will play a twisted selection of tracks,

selecting tunes from hardtek to jump up closing the venue with a special breakcore treat.

This Friday 20th Boltek is having a special evening full of techno sounds at Orange club. Boltek duo Marco Cuba and Lecter have been in the electronic scene in our country since its early years. Producers of the biggest electronic festival in Bolivia,¨LAPAZTOK¨ had a great success among new raving generations as well as the old crowd that is always ready for electro sounds in all its different styles. Born in Perú, Aguilar brothers have been promoting events since the early 90´s participating in every major rave as well as every electro club in La Paz. Closing the second week of june junglist crew OI+BASS is organizing BEATS PESADOS part 2.

The party will take place at orange club saturday 14th starting aproximately at midnight.

This is the second date for AJAX and Dj QUiEN to show-off their turntable skills on a prepared stage arranged just for the venue. Both djs have been performing for several years in our city , in fact AJAX is one of the first jungle djs that came to Bolivia from D.C. during the take-off years of drum n bass. Quien has been growing a solid reputation as a performing DJ playing at electro parties as well as hip hop venues demonstrating his infinite scratching skills. Special guests hand-picked by the organizers will be opening the venue as they perform an intro to the live set.

Evening will be full of surprises as the duet spin vinyl and push buttons on the digital decks. This series of parties are just an introduction to strictly jungle venues, La Paz city is ready for all-night drum n bass parties where people expect hardcore sounds and broken beat madness as djs play jungle till dawn.

Celebrating their first year alternative club Namasté is having a theme party this saturday 7th.

Namasté has been hosting electro parties for one year in our city presenting the best performing djs. The theme for this party is Chespirito. For those who are not familiarized with this tv icon it could be said that this actor changed the way south americans see comedy on tv. Chespirito was discovered as an actor while he was waiting in line to apply for a job as a writer and soon he began writing and staring in his comedy shows. He continuosly stared in shows for mexican television from 1970 to 1995 and became a phenomenon throughout Latin America.

One of his most famous caracters was Chapulin Colorado a goodhearted superhero who always got involved in funny situations. Embracing pop culture from Mexico is nothing new to our artists and this venue will be no exception.

Djs Trans and Guerrero will be opening the evening as they play minimal tecnno and electro house. Resident Dj Pituko along with Ajax and Quien will be closing the evening as they make the finiest selection on world beats. Djs promess to have a great selection including dub step, reggea, drum n bass, electro and all types of world beats.

As Jungle scene is growing rapidly in our city many cats from La Paz are pushing new boundaries into drum steps. New generations are programing new sounds using old school influences and original sounds from our region. This evolution would not have been possible with out true junglists that brought massiff tunes to La Paz during the golden era of drum n bass.One of these cats is StarWind, fellow producer and original junglist. This following interview was taken from sparking bowl sessions at the artist studio.

7: Name and occupation . Starwind, Software Engineer.

7:When did you start on drum steps?
S:Well in DC (District of Columbia,Washington) we are all born into drum steps.
From gogo our own brand of street drums and junglist scene which we lead into the golden era of drum n bass, New York, New Jersey, DC, Toronto,Philadelphia & Baltimore. Hardcore junglists only hail from these cities as they have witnessed the take off years 1993-1996 and the rise to the golden era 1997/2000

7:Why is Jungle music related to urban lifestyle?
S:Because these large cities are jungles of concrete and the music from the 80's that was forged
into fast breaks and relentless basslines were being played in abandoned warehouses and clubs everyday. later formed into junglists leagues where you could hit a junglist venue each day of the week for a special event. This music represents the tech speed and the life of street inner
city kids addicted to fast breaks and basslines that make you dance non-stop and dream endlessly.

7:What's the true meaning of jungle music to you?
S:Jungle music to me means my raver life.
Im jungle elitist for life since i first heard it at raves in the 90s, i just couldnt stop until today.

7:Why do kids love so much this genre?
S: I Guess kids love so much this genre because of its versatility, no other electronic genre has
so many sub-genres , you have dark, jazzy,raggae, grimey, intell, jump up, techy, gangsta, digital, future, and many steps to smash your snares to...and glide away in your basslines.
trancy stuff, jazzy, techy, dnb has a wide spectrum other genres are just limited to easily.

7:You came from states years ago, whats your perception on jungle since then and what conection you see between andean city living and fast drum steps in La Paz city?
S: Well today jungle is being played in every commercial as a pro-amen break, in every Tv show and alike...It has become a world phenomenon and I am very glad, I knew it would be.
Since the 90s it has grown to movie soundtracks and Tv commercials for any product possible.
the scene some say has "died". But there are still many loyal hardcore junglist taking this energy to new levels, La Paz has the advantage over other Bolivian cities of having electronic culture from Europe and America because of large amounts of La Paz city kids living abroad

and bringing back hardcore electronic essence from these futuristic counties and injecting it

into the La Paz city night.

7:How do you see drum n bass scene in La Paz 2010?
S. I see La Paz 2010 drum n bass more solid than ever. As more producers and beat drawers will step into the jungle scene with digital and old school influence manly from the birth towns of this type of music.(U.S. & U.K) and of course injecting thier own spirit into it. possibly creating a strictly junglist league. With junglist only venues. like 95' East Coast US/UK.
